- 2008 The Camden Diocese plans a seriers of mergers and consolidations. Plans are to reduce the current number of parishes from 124 to 68. One priest will be assigned to each parish. In addition to Saint James more than 100 churches in the diocese will remain open for worship. Father Paul Harte is responsible for the plans involving the merger of Corpus Christi, Carneys Point, Queen of the Apostles, Pennsville, St. Mary, Salem, and St. James, Penns Grove. Church officials say a projected priest shortage was only one of the reasons the Diocese chose to consolidate. Parishioners have been encouraged to provide input into this complicated process.
